Snags, a name for standing dead trees, are vital pieces of our forested ecosystems. They embody the forces of nature, the passing of time, and the power of fire. I am obsessively drawn to the joy and clarity that photographing these once living trees brings me, and will always be delightfully overwhelmed by how many there are to see across the endless ridgelines and valleys of the west. In search of calm and simplicity, I photograph in black and white, and capture the exact exposure and composition I want, entirely in the field. No editing is done to my photographs, so that as much time as possible is spent in the mountains.
